Multi-Select Group Rules is an enhancement to Dynamic Groups that lets Organisation Admins set more than one value on a single group rule. A user is added to the group if they match any of the values on that rule, so you can build complex audiences with far fewer rules.
What it is
By default each dynamic group rule accepted a single value, so matching 'any of these' meant creating a separate rule (or rule set) for every value. Multi-Select Group Rules removes that limit. You can now:
- Select multiple options from a list – for criteria with defined options (e.g. 'Tags', 'Languages', 'Enrolment Statuses'), pick several at once from a searchable list.
- Enter multiple text values – for free-text fields (e.g. 'Email', 'Location', custom text fields), enter several comma-separated values using the new '...any' filters.
How it works
- Add values as chips. When multi-select is enabled, the value field becomes a chip picker. Type to search, click to select multiple options, and each choice appears as a removable chip. Remove a single value with the x on its chip, or clear them all with the x on the field. For text fields, you can type or paste comma-separated values.
- Matching is 'OR' within a rule. When a rule has multiple values, a user matches if any one of the values matches. You still control the logic between rules and between rule sets (AND/OR), exactly as before.
- New text filters. For text-based fields, four new filters support multiple comma-separated values: 'Contains any', 'Does not contain any', 'Is equal to any', and 'Is not equal to any'.
- Frameworks. Where a rule uses a Job Role or Profile framework, you can select multiple frameworks from the side panel.
- Limits are unchanged. Up to 5 rule sets per group and 10 rules per rule set. There's no fixed limit on the number of values you can add to a single rule.
- Existing rules keep working. Single-value rules created before this feature are unaffected and need no changes.
Supported rule types
Select multiple options from a list is available for:
- User Profile – 'Tags', 'Languages', 'Timezones'
- Skills – 'Skill Status', 'Seniority', 'Ambition'
- Learning Experience – 'Enrolment Status'
- Playlist – 'Enrolment Status'
- Group – 'Membership Status'
- Badge – 'Badge Status'
- Role – 'Admin Role'
- Job Role – 'Framework 1', 'Framework 2', 'Position Manager'
- Profile Field – Framework fields
Enter multiple comma-separated text values (using the new '...any' filters) is available for:
- User Profile – 'Email', 'First name', 'Last name', 'Org reference', 'Location'
- Job Role – 'Title', 'External ID'
- Custom Fields – any Short Text or Long Text Profile Field or Entity Field
Example use cases
- Add users whose Job Role framework is any of several departments, in a single rule.
- Target users based in any of a list of locations by entering comma-separated location values.
- Group users enrolled in any of several Learning Experiences by selecting multiple Learning Experiences in one rule.
- Match users who hold any of a set of tags, without creating a separate rule per tag.
Considerations
- 'OR' within a rule. Multiple values on one rule always use OR logic. To require users to match multiple conditions, use additional rules or rule sets with AND between them.
- Processing cadence is inherited from Dynamic Groups. Rules are processed when published, then on the standard Dynamic Groups schedule.
