How to log in as another user

Prerequisites: You need to have the org admin, organisation support, user manager, or group support role to do this.

Note: You can't see the admin side of the platform when using login as.

Admins can log in as another user, see the platform as if they are that user, and perform actions on their behalf. It’s useful for investigating problems such as learning experiences not completing properly and can be used to test the user experience of a learning experience you’ve designed.

How to do it

In the users' menu, locate the learner you want to log in as and click the eye icon next to their name:

Click the LOGIN AS USER button to log in as them. 

Alternatively, you can open the user's profile and click Login as user in the side bar.

When you are logged in as another user, a red bar will appear across the bottom of your screen. You can minimise the red bar by clicking the people icon on the left:

To return to your own account, click Return to your login in the bottom right.

How do I know if an account has been accessed via Log in as?

If you use Login as to perform an action as a user in the platform, this will be visible in the corresponding xAPI statement sent to your Learning Records Store. This is only true of statements from the platform, not statements generated by xAPI content hosted in the platform, such as Adapt courses.

In the xAPI statement, you will see that the ‘impersonator’ extension has appeared and contains the details of the user who’s been impersonating the learner.

If you’re using Learning Locker, you can find all the statements created by someone using ‘Login as’ by filtering by Where > extensions > impersonator > user_id > 0
