What is a Smart Revision Course:
A smart revision course is designed to have a learner complete an assessment within a course to test their knowledge on a subject. If the learner passes the assessment the course will mark as complete and will not require the learner to revise any content within the course. However if the learner fails the assessment the course will direct them to the content within the course based on the questions they got incorrect within the course.
The smart revision courses utilise a number of functions within the adapt builder to achieve this. Below is an a outline of the functions(settings/extensions) that are used to create a smart revision course.
- Assessment extension
- Assisted Learning extension
- Learning Objectives extension
- Start Controller
The above extensions and setting will work together to automatically direct the user to an assessment within the course, if they fail they will be redirected to content within the course using the assisted learning and learning objectives.
Pre-requisites:
Before setting up the course to take advantage of the smart revision set up, their is a couple of things that you will want to have completed within the course prior to setting up the smart revision within the course. Firstly you will want to ensure that the course content has been fully built out, ie all content that is required to be within the course is added.
You may also wish to move the assessment page within the course to the start of the course(as shown below) if it is not already set at the beginning. Although this is not necessary as start controller can direct the users to the correct page within the course regardless.
Adding the extensions:
The next thing you will want to do within the course is to add your extensions, note if you use the assessment quick start option(highly recommended) to set up the assessment you do not need to add the assessment extension to the course as the assessment quick start will add the extension.
Below will outline how to add the extensions:
- Access the course(either double click on the course or click on the cog wheel>edit).
- Go to extensions from the menu.
- Search for Assisted Learning and Learning Objectives extensions under available extensions section.
- Click the Add button next to the extension(s).
Once the correct extensions have been added to the course, the course is ready to be configured.
Configuring the course:
Configure the course assessment:
You will first want to set up the assessment within the course, if you have not already done so. As suggested above using the assessment quick start option is the recommended method to set the assessment up on the course. Below is an outline on how to use the quick start option.
- Go to the assessment page
- Click on the cog wheel within the article that contains your assessment questions
- Click on - Assessment quick-start
This will bring you to the quick start section where you can select the options for the assessment, below is an outline on each setting:

- Display results - Adds the assessment results block to the assessment page, will appear below the assessment (recommended to include if not using single submit).
Configure the Assisted Learning:
The assisted learning extension does not need much in the way of configuration however there is a number of settings that can be configured as to give a more personalised feel to the revision process and to give a better user experience:
Below is an outline of the settings within the extension:
- Enable Assisted Learning - Enables/disables the extension (ensure this is enabled).
- Display 'Code' in results - Will display the learning objective code within the results screen.

In addition to the above settings there is a number of options to customise the messages that would be displayed to the learner from the assisted learning extension when they would be interacting with the content/assessment. Below is an outline of those settings:

Additional Notes:
There is some recommendations when setting up a smart revision course that have been highlighted below:
Extensions not to include within the course:
As to provide the best user experience with the content below is a list of extensions that is suggested to exclude from the course as they can break the follow of the course:
- Page incomplete prompt
- Page footer navigation
- Course exit confirmation
- Bookmarking
- Scroll Prompt
It may also be beneficial to disable the - Page level progress - extension at a page level for all pages outside the assessment page. As some learners may believe that they have other content to complete when being directed through the content from the revision.
Do not use lock types:
It is highly recommended that you do not set a lock type within the course when setting up a smart revision course. If following the set up above, there is no need for a lock on any of the pages, the learner will not be able to navigate through the course outside of using the revision options and the course will always launch to the assessment page.
Content Order/Structure:
It is recommended that the order and structure of the content in the course follows the order in which they would relate to the questions within the assessment. This is to avoid issues where content could potentially be skipped when following the revision options. If content is set to mark on view it can cause issues where when reviewing material relating to another question could potentially mark it complete within the course.
For example - If content that marks complete on view which relates to question 2 appears on page before content that relates to question 1 on the same page. When you review the content for question 1 through the revision option, the revision will force scroll past the content for question 2 and mark it as complete and when you access the revision for question 2 the content will not be presented as it is registered as completed.
