Summary: Learning experiences just need a name and a resource attached to them to start being useful. There's a lot of different kinds and a lot of ways to customise them, but those are the key elements.
Learning experiences are activities undertaken by learners to improve their knowledge, such as reading an article or completing an e-learning course. Each tile that you see on your dashboard is a learning experience.
Learning experiences on the dashboard
There are various types of learning experiences and they can be configured to present content and behave in many different ways.
Learning experiences can be grouped together in playlists and can contain single objects or multiple objects collected into levels. See The structure of content in the platform for more information.
Creating a learning experience
In the admin menu, go to Learning Experiences. Here you’ll see a full list of all the existing learning experiences. Click NEW LEARNING EXPERIENCE at the top of the page.
Select the type of learning experience you want to create.
The type you select will be displayed beneath the name of the learning experience on the dashboard.
Most learning experience types behave the same way, they just have different names so that the learner knows what kind of content they contain. The one exception is “Undertake an Online Course” which can be a single e-learning course or a multilevel course. You may have heard these multilevel courses referred to as “OLXs”, “MOOCs”, or “Masterclasses”.
You will now need to fill in the main details of your learning experience.
| Name: The name that learners will see. | |
| Alias: The unique ID that the platform uses to reference the learning experience. It is used in the URL for the learning experience. If left blank, the platform will automatically generate an alias based on the name. | |
| Short Description: The description that will appear on the dashboard. |
Visibility: If Public, all learners can see the learning experience. If Secret, only learners who are enrolled on the learning experience can see it.
| Allow Self Enrolment: If checked, learners will be allowed to self enrol on a course. The top image is the screen learners will see if they self enrolment is not checked and they attempt to access an learning experience they aren't enrolled on. The bottom image shows an learning experience with self enrolment enabled. |
|
Allow users to unenroll from course: If checked, learners can leave learning experiences.
Enrolment Length (weeks): Set the completion period for the learning experience - this will come into effect from the moment of the learners’ enrolment. After the time period expires, the learner will no longer have access to the learning experience.
| Start Date: Set a specific date for the learning experience to be available from. This image shows what a learner will see if they try and access an learning experience that has a start date in the future. |
If you've created an Undertake an Online Course learning experience, you'll also be prompted to pick a game type. See the game types guide to find out more.
Press Submit when you’re happy. There are a lot of other ways to further configure and customise your learning experience, all that is explained in the subsequent guides.
