Variables Tool
The Variables Tool allows users to create and manage custom variables at the course level, enabling more dynamic and personalized content branching. Users can create new variables, edit existing ones, or delete variables for the entire course.
To Add Variables:
1. Open your course and navigate to the Tools section in the left panel and click on the Variable Tool tab
2. Fill out the fields to define your custom variable. Don’t worry—learners won’t see any of this information. It’s just for you and others setting up the course logic behind the scenes.
- Variable Name
- Give your variable a name—it’ll hold the user’s response. Pick something clear so you’ll recognize it later when setting up logic.
- Variable Description
- This helps you (and anyone else editing the course) understand what the variable is for. Think of it as a quick note about its purpose.
- Answer/Value
- Answer: These are the choices you'll see when setting up branching content. Keep them clear and simple so it's easy to select the right one while building your logic.
- Value: This field is optional but comes in handy if the text in the Answer field is too long. If you leave it blank, the text in the Answer field in the branching logic dropdown. But if you add something here, that’s what will appear instead
- Click the +Add Variable Value button to add as many answer options as you need.
-
- To add more variables, click on the +ADD VARIABLE button at the bottom left
3. Once you’ve finished setting up your variables, click the SAVE button in the bottom right corner.
To Edit an Existing Variable
- Navigate to the Tools section in the left panel and click on the Variable Tool tab
- Make your changes to any existing variable by editing the fields
- Important Note: Editing the name of a variable that has already been used in branching will break its link. You'll need to update the branched content to re-establish the connection with the new variable name.
To Delete A Variable or Variable Value
- Navigate to the Tools section in the left panel and click on the Variable Tool tab
- To delete the entire Variable, click on x Remove Variable
- To delete Variable Answer choices, click on the trash icon
- Important Note: Deleting Variables and Variable Values will break its branching link. You'll need to update the branched content to either re-establish a connection with another variable or a new variable.
