Summary: Add a confidence slider so learners can rate their confidence in a subject. Add a second at the end of the course to see if their confidence level changes.
The confidence slider is a reflective question component. Learners rate their confidence on a subject and receive tailored feedback based on their response. This is particularly useful if you want to see how a learner’s confidence has changed as a result of their learning - you could put one confidence slider at the start of your course and one at the end.
The confidence slider isn’t a standard question component so cannot be used in an assessment, if you have a need for a slider in your assessment then we advise using the regular slider component.
Adding and configuring a confidence slider
Click Add component.
Select Confidence slider and add it to the course.
Double click on your confidence slider component to edit it. Fill in the title and body text as you would on any other component.
Scroll down to the Properties section:
- Instruction: Optionally add instruction text.
- Disabled Body: This optional text appears in place of the body text when the confidence slider to which this one is linked has not been answered. This field can be left blank but if it is linked to an earlier slider we would recommend adding some text advising the user to complete the initial confidence slider in the event they have not completed it.
- Attempts: This is 1 by default and must be left at this. The confidence slider cannot have multiple attempts.
- Display Attempts: This is defaulted to false and we recommend keeping it set to false. The confidence slider can not have multiple attempts.
- Display Feedback: Setting this to false disables feedback, so it is not shown to the learner. By default this will be set to true.
- Display Marking: When this is enabled users will always receive a tick as there are no incorrect answers for the Confidence Slider.
- Question Weight: The confidence slider cannot be used in an assessment so the question weight is irrelevant.
- Record Interaction: Determines whether or not the learner’s answers will be recorded to the learning platform via cmi interactions. This is defaulted to true.
- Save response?: This is an optional setting. When set to true, the user’s response will be saved so that it can be restored in subsequent sessions. This functionality requires that either the Spoor extension or the xAPI extension is included in the course. If Should Store Responses in the Spoor extension is set to true, the learner’s response will be recorded regardless of what you specify here. This only needs to be set if you want to track the user’s responses to a particular confidence slider component without also tracking all other user responses.
- Link ID: The component ID of a slider to which this slider can be linked. This is optional and if set, will disable user interaction until a selection is submitted on the linked slider. To get the ID for this, go to your original slider component, click on the cog wheel and choose copy ID to clipboard. This will then allow you to paste the component ID into your component.

- Scale Label - Start: This field allows you to enter a text label that will appear at the start of the slider scale.
- Scale Label - End: This field allows you to enter a text label that will appear at the end of the slider scale.
- Scale Start: This value is the numeric start of the scale.
- Scale End: This value is the numeric end of the scale.
- Scale Step: This numerical value determines the amount your slider scale will increment. By default this is set to
- Correct Answer: This setting is inherited from the slider question schema, but the confidence slider has no correct answer so can be left You can also ignore the correct range options.
- Show number on indicator: When enabled, a numeric value appears on the slider marker. This is enabled by default. Please note: Show position indicator must be enabled in order for this to work.
- Show position indicator: When enabled, a marker for the position of the slider along the scale is If Show number on indicator is enabled this marker will contain a numeric value. This is defaulted to enabled.
- Show scale: This is defaulted to enabled, and ensures that the lines and numbers of the scale are visible. Switching this off will remove these.
Feedback
There are three types of feedback available:
Generic feedback is always presented to the user.
Comparison feedback is presented on submission if the slider has been linked to another slider.
Threshold feedback is determined according to the range in which the user's selection falls.
All feedback elements are optional and don’t cancel each other out. On the next page, we’ll explain how to configure each of them.
- Feedback Separator: Optional text/markup that will separate each feedback element.
- Generic feedback: Text that will be shown whichever selection is
- Lower: This text will be shown if the user has selected a lower value than was chosen on the linked slider.
- Same: This text will be shown if the user selects the same value on the linked slider.
- Higher: This text will be shown if the user has selected a higher value than was chosen on the linked slider.
- Threshold: Multiple threshold items can be created. This is a good option for entirely customised feedback. You can specify specific ranges of numbers that should trigger specific Simply click Add and fill in the following details (1):
- Range bottom: The lower bound of the range (inclusive).
- Range top: The upper bound of the range (inclusive).
- Range description: The text that will be included in the feedback if the user’s selection falls within the range specified by the bottom and top values.
Adding a second confidence slider to your course
A second confidence slider can be included later in the course. By default it will be locked until the user has completed the original slider. You can customise the message on the component to point learners to the first confidence slider if they haven’t completed it.
Prior to completion, the second slider will highlight the previous response with a yellow bar.
When a learner submits their second slider, you can give them generic feedback or specific feedback based on whether their confidence level was lower, the same, or higher than their original answer.
